Jordyn’s Buzz – August 4th, 2023

Jordyn’s Buzz – August 4th, 2023

Good morning, listeners, I was so happy to be back on air with you this morning!

This was another huge week for movies! After the release of Barbie and Oppenheimer, last week became AMC’s single highest admission revenue of all time (yes, all time!). In Barbenheimer’s second weekend, the films made $140 million in the box office and in its opening weekend, Haunted Mansion made $24 million.

As a result, it seems that now’s the time to be dropping news about upcoming movies.

Last week, I mentioned the upcoming Polly Pocket movie starring Lily Collins, and this week, word is, the Barney franchise is getting its own live action film with Daniel Kaluuya.

Though plot details have yet to be released, the film will be ‘catered toward millennials who grew up watching the show’ and ‘lean into millennial angst’. It will also ‘speak to the nostalgia of the brand in a way that will resonate with adults and entertain today’s kids’ and ‘explore the compelling modern day hero’.

Another film that got the green light this week is Scream VII! Production will not begin until the strikes are resolved, but the film does have a director already.

Speaking of the strikes, there is a meeting being held today between the Writers Guild of America and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, so we could potentially be seeing a change or resolution coming soon.

In TV right now, we’re seeing some of the same delays because of the strikes, but there is a new season of Loki that’s going to be coming out on Disney+ on October 6th! The trailer and promotional poster were recently released, check them out below.

The Prime sensation The Summer I Turned Pretty also announced yesterday that it’s been renewed for a third season which will begin production once the strikes are resolved.

The Summer I Turned Pretty was one of my favorite book series when I was younger and the Prime series has become an instant success! The story follows Belly, a teenage girl who visits Cousins Beach every summer with her family. Each year, they stay with the Fishers, longtime friends of the family, and since she can remember, Belly has been in love with Conrad Fisher until one summer, when she realizes that Conrad might not be the only Fisher boy she could be paying attention to.

Season two is currently airing, but check out the trailer for season one below – the show is included with an Amazon Prime subscription!

Although it’s a young adult series, it will bring you back all the nostalgia! You’ll be smiling (and tearing up) during every episode.

Surprisingly, this was also a big week for Broadway. Back to the Future had its opening night last night and we got news of two new shows that will be coming soon.

The first is The Notebook – yes, THE Notebook! The show is based off of the beloved Nicholas Sparks novel and accompanying film and previews for the show start in February of 2024 and it will officially open on March 14th, 2024.

A cast has not been released yet, but the music and lyrics have been penned by Ingrid Michaelson. The show was originally announced in 2019 and ran in Chicago in the fall of last year and will move to Broadway in a few months.

Lin-Manuel Miranda is also working on a new show! He is going to be adapting The Warriors as a stage musical which will be based off of the 1965 book and 1979 film of the same name. Although I haven’t read the book nor seen the movie, I’m excited for this adaption – Lin-Manuel Miranda is incredibly talented!

This week in the music world, Lizzo has been under some heat as allegations surface about how she’s treated her team on tour. This one broke my heart a little bit – I LOVE Lizzo, but the things people are saying are really not in Lizzo’s favor, so I am really hoping that they’re not true. You can read up on the controversies here.

In more exciting news though, if you missed Taylor Swift while she was here on her Eras Tour and you’re willing to travel, she’s announced some additional tour dates. Next October and November, she’ll be traveling to Miami, New Orleans, Indianapolis, and Toronto.

If you want to purchase tickets, you have until tomorrow 8/5 at 5pm EST to register for Verified Fan to purchase tickets. You can do that here.

Lastly, if you’re looking for movies to see this weekend, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is out and Meg 2: The Trench are both in theaters now, and for a full list of all the films released this week, check out this page.

See you back here next week!
