Happy Friday!
The day is finally here – the Michael Jackson biopic is officially in theaters today! I feel like we’ve been waiting for this movie for years at this point, so check it this weekend and let me know your thoughts! I am definitely excited to see this one.
If you’re a Top Gun fan, mark your calendars! Not only is a third film coming, but the original film and Top Gun: Maverick will be in theaters for ONE WEEK ONLY starting May 13th. This double feature is in celebration of the original movie’s 40th anniversary.
As for books, Book Con was a blast last weekend, though I don’t have much to share in terms of announcements that were made at Book Con. What I can share though, and what I think Veronica Roth shared at Book Con, is that there are TWO new Divergent books coming!
Roth is expanding the Divergent universe with a new duology that will take place in an alternate-universe, kind of like a “what-if” scenario as opposed to a sequel or prequel to the existing books. The first book, The Sixth Faction, will be released on October 6th, 2026 and the second book of the duology is scheduled to come out in February of 2027.
Rebecca Yarros, author of the best-selling Empyrean series, announced that there is a new Empyrean book coming in September. Though it is not the long-awaited fourth book of the series, it does take place in the same universe. She hasn’t released any further info or a book cover yet.
This is a big year for The Hunger Games as well. The new film Sunrise on the Reaping comes out on November 20th and several new editions of the books are set for a release later this year. There is a new trade paperback of Sunrise on the Reaping coming in August, a five book box set (which will include the trade paperback) coming in September, an illustrated version of Mockingjay coming in October, and a special edition of The Hunger Games coming in November featuring an exclusive interview with Suzanne Collins and David Levithan. You can read more here!
If you haven’t seen the Sunrise on the Reaping trailer yet, buckle your seatbelt and check it out below. This honestly may have been my favorite book of the series and Joseph Zada (who recently starred in We Were Liars) is playing the lead and he is going to be amazing as Haymitch, who was played by Woody Harrelson in the original Hunger Games films.
Speaking of We Were Liars, I got to meet the author of the book, E. Lockhart, last week at Book Con and she was an absolute joy! The second season of We Were Liars is on the way and she also has a new book coming out this fall called The Pools. Many of E. Lockhart’s books take place in and around New England, The Pools being no exception, so if you’re interested, check out the book here. I grabbed an early copy of the book at Book Con, so I will update you as I read! E. Lockhart’s books never disappoint and I don’t foresee this one being any different.
As for TV, if you’re a Stranger Things fan, the new animated series Tales from ‘85 hit Netflix yesterday and explores Hawkins in the winter of 1985, where the original characters come face to face with new monsters and a paranormal mystery.
Lastly, there is a Dancing with the Stars spin-off series coming to ABC this July, which will be hosted by Robert Irwin! It’s Called The Next Pro and will be about 12 up-and-coming dancers as they move into the same house and vie for a spot as one of the dancers on the upcoming season of Dancing with the Stars, which will air this fall.
See you back here next week for another edition of The Buzz, brought to you by Dini’s tinis!
