Jordyn’s Buzz – January 19th, 2024

2024 seems like it will be the year of Broadway!

The Huey Lewis musical is opening in just over two months and the cast has officially been announced with Corey Cott McKenzie Kurtz in the lead roles. You can check out the full cast here.

Like Mamma Mia, the show is a jukebox musical, meaning that it tells a story using Huey Lewis’ music. It is not a show about Huey Lewis, but it will use his music to tell the story of a couple who get a second shot at their dreams. In order for them to figure out what they want out of their lives, it will take some help from their friends and The Power of Love!

The show is set to begin previews on March 29th and you can purchase tickets here if you’re interested!

Other Broadway shows that are coming this spring are The Notebook (previews begin on February 10th), Water for Elephants (previews begin on February 24th), The Outsiders (previews begin on March 10th), Hell’s Kitchen (previews begin on March 28th), and The Great Gatsby (previews begin on March 29th).

Speaking of performing, Elton John scooped up his first Emmy this past weekend and has officially joined the ranks of EGOT winners – meaning, he has now officially won an Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar, and Tony Award! He’s one of only 19 performers to achieve this!

As for other performers, the time is coming for the Super Bowl, and in addition to Usher headlining the halftime show, Reba McEntire will sing the national anthem, Post Malone will perform “America the Beautiful,” and Andra Day will sing “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”

The Coachella lineup was also announced and No Doubt is officially reuniting for the festival for the first time in nearly a decade! Check out the full lineup below. And if you aren’t going to the festival but see some artists you like, save this page! You can livestream the event in April.

In television, fans and cast members alike have been fixating and pushing for a second season of the Prime series Daisy Jones and the Six, the limited series based off of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s novel.

Sam Claflin, who starred in the series as Billy, has been one of the strongest proponents for a second season, stating that he has ideas of what could happen and how these characters’ stories could continue.

If you don’t recall or aren’t familiar, Daisy Jones and the Six is about a band in the 1970s who  rose to immeasurable fame and then out of nowhere, they called it quits. In the present day in the series, the band members have finally agreed to reveal what really happened and why they stopped making music. You can check out the series here. The story is loosely based off of Fleetwood Mac, and I’ll link the promo for the series below.

There is also a Wizards of Waverly Place sequel coming, based off of the Disney Channel sensation. The series will follow Justin Russo, played by David Henrie, and his life without Wizard powers. Henrie starred on the original series from 2007 – 2012 alongside Selena Gomez, who will appear in the pilot of the new series, though it’s unknown how regular her role will be after the pilot.

As for films, there is a Top Gun 3 in the works in addition to a Richard Simmons biopic.

Lastly, 1974 was a great year for film and all of those movies will be celebrating their 50th anniversary this year. In honor of the occasion, Netflix has put together a collection called Milestone Movies: The Anniversary Collection – they have added 14 iconic films to their platform from the year 1974 including films like Chinatown and The Great Gatsby.

If you like this idea, the streaming service will also be commemorating films from 1984 in April (turning 40), films from 1994 in July (turning 30), and films 2004 in October (turning 20).
