The Juneteenth Journey, preview series of events for Monterey
Juneteenth Coalition, a nonprofit, will be kicking off their “The Juneteenth Journey” - a series of events celebrating the anniversary of the end of slavery in the United States. "The goal is community solidarity, community oneness," said Terrell Maddox, chief visionary officer for Juneteenth Coalition.For its first event, the newly formed nonprofit will host the Juneteenth Journey. It's a series of seven events in five days honoring Juneteenth. Juneteenth celebrates the freedom of slaves in Texas, two and a half years after President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation outlawing slavery. The coalition was motivated to do the series of events following the death of George Floyd in police custody and other violent police events. The coalition wants people to be able to step into history during their series of events. "Making sure people are aware of the ancestors that sacrificed to get us here and that we are not done fighting. We are going to continue to fight," said Sean Carr, Juneteenth Coalition head of finance and business operations. The events start Wednesday, wrapping up with a formal cotillion on Sunday. The coalition said the most impactful event is the Anguish of the Elders, where people will fast for 12 hours while participating in 246 minutes of work to commemorate 246 years of slavery in the U.S."That way, we can try to envoke that empathy, and people can feel it.
