Cinco de Mayo has become one of the most celebrated days in the United States. It’s even more popular in the U.S. than in Mexico. It’s also one of the deadliest for drunk drivers. According to one study it’s the 11th deadliest day for drunk drivers. According to the law firm Callahan & Blaine 32-percent of fatal accidents on May 5th and 6th involved a drunk driver. The firm analyzed fatal crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, from 2015-2019.“Unfortunately some of the celebration goes a little bit overboard and then bad decisions are made,” said Miguel Cabrera, spokesman for the Salinas police department.Cabrera said the department will have extra patrols on the street from Wednesday through the weekend.“If anybody’s going to go out there and celebrate and have a good time .. they should do so responsibly and by that I mean they should not even consider driving after they've been drinking.
