The Central Coast celebrates Cinco De Mayo
Cinco de Mayo has become one of the most celebrated days in the United States. It’s even more popular in the U.S. than in Mexico. It’s also one of the deadliest for drunk drivers.
According to one study it’s the 11th deadliest day for drunk drivers. According to the law firm Callahan & Blaine 32-percent of fatal accidents on May 5th and 6th involved a drunk driver.
The firm analyzed fatal crash data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, from 2015-2019.
“Unfortunately some of the celebration goes a little bit overboard and then bad decisions are made,” said Miguel Cabrera, spokesman for the Salinas police department.
Cabrera said the department will have extra patrols on the street from Wednesday through the weekend.
“If anybody’s going to go out there and celebrate and have a good time .. they should do so responsibly and by that I mean they should not even consider driving after they've been drinking. There's many ways of getting home safely,” said Cabrera.
Bartenders will also help crack down on people who’ve had too much to drink, to make sure they don’t drive drunk.
“People are very anxious to get out and have a good time and get those drinks going on Cinco de Mayo we just try to keep it at a slower pace,” said Maryia Agra a bartender at Casa Sorrento Pizzeria, in Salinas.
Last year, Cinco de Mayo celebrations were put on hold because of the pandemic. This year, lockdown restrictions are easing with bars and restaurants are able to increase their capacity. Bigger crowds are keeping bartenders on alert for those who’ve had too much to drink.
“I feel like once people kind of start saying out of the ordinary things that's when you start to cut them off and ask them how they're getting home and make sure it's a safe way to get home and make sure they're not grabbing for their car keys,” said Agra.
“Unfortunately some of the celebration goes a little bit overboard and then bad decisions are made,” added Cabrera.
Those bad decisions could cost you. According to police, a DUI could cost between $10,000 and $12,000, your license could be suspended and you could lose your job.
“Iit's a reminder that it's not worth it,” said Cabrera.
