Stolen photo album that documents filming of 'The Perfect Storm' returned to owners
A stolen photo album that documents the filming of a movie in Massachusetts has been returned to its owners.Maryanne Shatford and her husband, Gregg Sousa, have their memories on display at their bar, the Crow's Nest in Gloucester, Massachusetts, about an hour outside of Boston by car. Both their family and bar were featured in the 2000 film "The Perfect Storm," and the couple has made their business a shrine to the six crew members of the commercial fishing vessel Andrea Gale, who were lost at sea.Among their most prized possessions was a photo album with pictures of Hollywood stars George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg and the other actors in the film."George Clooney played Billy Tyne, Janet Wright played my mom and Mark Wahlberg played my brother, Bobby," Shatford said.On Sunday, the couple noticed their beloved photo album — a record of the good times and the bad — had been stolen."I know someone didn't just steal the whole album. It had to be around here somewhere, but it wasn't," Sousa said. The prime suspects, however, were captured on surveillance and Shatford shared the story on social media."They were in a hurry. They paid their bill and they left, and the photo album was missing," Shatford said. "The guy pushed the pocketbook of the lady and said: 'Let's hurry up and get out of here,'" Sousa said. On Wednesday morning, the couple received a cardboard box at the door that had a return address from Georgia. Inside the box, they found the stolen photo album and a note that reads: "I just wanted to return this. It was taken by a drunk friend, and I do not feel that was right. SORRY.""I don’t think they had any interest in the history of the story or anything. I think they just took it because he was drunk," Shatford said. "People do stupid things when they’re drinking sometimes. I’m just glad someone grew a conscience and sent it back."It made me really sad, what does it mean to them?" she added. "And it means a lot to us, and not just us, but the people who come in here."Shatford celebrated the return of the photo album with some champagne and the couple is delivering a message to the thief."I don't think the person who took it, if they came back, I don't think our customers would really give them a warm greeting," Shatford said."Don't come back to my bar. But I'm glad we got it back," Sousa said.Shatford and Sousa said they now plan to make photocopies of the entire album and digitize the pictures so something like this doesn't happen again.
