IRS tax refunds are delayed this year. They are running weeks behind schedule.
The deadline to file your federal taxes was May 17 in most states this year and if you're wondering where your refund is, you are not alone.
The IRS usually sends out most refunds within about three weeks of returns being filed. But this year, the wait has been six to eight weeks for some taxpayers.
According to the National Taxpayer Advocate, the IRS is holding roughly 29 million returns for manual processing. It says the $900 billion stimulus package that former President Donald Trump signed into law in December did not give the IRS enough time to get ready for some of the tax code changes.

The IRS has posted the following message on its refunds page:
COVID-19 Mail Processing Delays
It's taking us longer to process mailed documents including:
- Paper tax returns, and
- All tax return-related correspondence.
We are processing all mail in the order we received it.
Do not file a second tax return or call the IRS.
When should you call the IRS?
Expect delays if you mailed a paper return, had to respond to an IRS inquiry about your e-filed return, claimed an incorrect Recovery Rebate Credit amount or used 2019 income to claim the EITC or ACTC. Otherwise, you should only call if it has been:
- 21 days or more since you e-filed
- "Where's My Refund" tells you to contact the IRS
Do not file a second tax return.
