Sisters named to US Olympic Women's Soccer Team
A pair of Massachusetts sisters will play for Team USA's women's soccer team in the Tokyo Olympic Games. U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Vlatko Andonovski on Wednesday named the 18-player roster for the delayed games.The squad includes Kristie and Samantha Mewis, who were born in Weymouth, Massachusetts, and grew up in Hanson. They are both first-time Olympians. This is the first time that sisters have played on Team USA on a world championship roster at the senior level. However, both have previously played together in the 2008 FIFA Under-17 Women’s World Cup in New Zealand and the 2010 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup in Germany.Related video: A look at the Olympic Village in TokyoKristie, the eldest sister by 592 days, went to Boston College and now plays with the Houston Dash. Sam attended UCLA and plays for the North Carolina Courage. Sam was a part of the UWNT World Cup win at France 2019.Kristie returned to the national team in late 2020 after a seven-year hiatus that included an ACL tear in 2018.
