EMPLOYE -- AN EMPLOYEE FOR THE SCHOOL WAY CAFE AT ORMOND BEACH MIDDLE SCHOOL IS A HERO BY ANYONE’S MEASURE AFTER SAVING A CO-WORKER WHO WAS CHOKING ON FOOD. SUMMER: KANESHIA STOKES HAD NEVER DONE THE HEIMLICH MANUVER BUT AS WESH 2’S CLAIRE METZ REPORTS SHE JUMPED INTO ACTION AND SAVED A LIFE. >> TRAUMATIZING. VERY SCARY. >> IT’S STILL EMOTIONAL FOR KANESHIA STOKES RECOUNTING THE DAY A FEW WEEKS BACK WHEN WHILE WASHING DISHES IN THE SCHOOL CAFETERIA: I HEARD SOMEBODY SAY LOOK. WHEN I LOOKED, MY COWORKER WAS DOWN ON ONE DATE, GRABBING HER CHEST. IT WAS BETWEEN LUNCH PERIODS SO THE CHILDREN THANKFULLY HADN’T COME IN YET MS. STOKES RAN TO HER COLLEAGUE WHO CLEARLY COULDN’T BREATHE HER FACE CHANGING COLOR. I PHYSICALLY PICKED HER UP. I AM A MOM OF FIVE AND SHE WAS OFF THE GROUND. THERE WAS NO OTHER CHOICE. >> AFTER 4 OR SO HEIMLICH COMPRESSIONS, THE FOOD DISLODGED. HER FRIEND AND CO-WORKER SAVED. I FELT LIKE IT -- I FELT LIKE IT WAS MY DUTY. >> SINCE THEN, IT HAS BEEN OTHERS DUTY TO REWARD THE MIDDLE SCHOOLERS’S BELOVED CHAMPION. HER STUDENTS, STAFF, THE SCHOOL DISTRICT, THE CO-WORKER SHE SAVED WAS PROUD. MS. STOKES SAYS THAT SHE WAS JUST HAPPY SHE WAS THERE. >> REGARD THIS OF WHAT IT , I HAVE BEEN FEELING LIKE THAT SINCE I WAS YOUNGER. >> THIS SAYS IT ALL ABOUT MS. STOKES. A cafeteria worker at a Florida middle school used the Heimlich maneuver to save a co-worker who was choking on food. Kaneshia Stokes is a humble hero.Stokes knew her co-worker at Ormond Beach Middle School was in trouble a few weeks ago when she glanced up from washing dishes and saw her on her knees grabbing her chest.That's when Stokes physically picked the woman up and performed the Heimlich.The school, the district and a number of organizations recently celebrated Ms. Stokes with a trophy, a basket of goodies, and a check for $2,000."I sometimes feel like I'm put on Earth to help others. Regardless of what it is. I've been feeling like that since I was younger," Stokes said. Ms. Stokes is also a finalist for the state's School Lunch Hero Award.Take a look at her story in the video above.
