Bolsa Knolls middle school in Salinas will soon be called John Gutierrez middle school, after the educator who helped open the school 11 years ago.
“We're very very humbled by the fact that they decided to name the school after my brother because I think he really deserves it,” said Rachel Torres, Gutierrez’s sister.
The school will be renamed after Gutierrez who served as the Bobcats first principal until his unexpected passing last October due to COVID-19.
“He might not be here physically but his name, his memory, his dedication will be here forever and I think that's big,” said Neil Patel, board member of the Santa Rita union school district.
Gutierrez spent his whole teaching career in the Santa Rita school district, nearly three decades. At its last meeting the school board voted unanimously to rededicate the school in his honor.
“We created a committee, had staff members, family members, community members to really explore other options but it came down to this was a big man in our community and we needed to do something big for him to honor him,” said Melissa Alderman, superintendent of the Santa Rita Union School District.
Gutierrez, a middle school principal of the year in 2019, was described as a dedicated, enthusiastic educator who put school, staff and students first. Often times challenging kids to excel and achieve their goals, and when he was on the losing end of a challenge he let students tape him to a wall. During another challenge he kissed a pig when kids met their mark.
“He dedicated his whole life to us so I think it's kind of fit that we dedicate this school to him,” said Bolsa Knolls 8th grader, Ame DeLaTorre.
“I'm glad we named the school after him because anything less wouldn't have been enough to honor him,” added Associated Student Body president, Natalia Rivera.
On Tuesday school leaders got confirmation that the California Department of Education approved the name change.
The district is planning on holding a community meeting on Friday May 28th, to give the public a chance to celebrate the life of John Gutierrez.
Denise Estrella will take over as principal of John Gutierrez Middle School on July 1st.
