Sacramento refugee fighting to stay in the US sues federal government
Omar Ameen, the Sacramento man accused of being an ISIS commander and murdering an Iraqi police officer, is suing the federal government.
Ameen wants to know why he is being prosecuted.
The Iraqi refugee filed a lawsuit against the Department of Justice, Federal Bureau of Investigation, and State Departments under FOIA for the records underlying his baseless prosecution.
According to Ameen's attorneys, he previously asked for all of the documents that were included as evidence in their case against him but never received those documents, and now he's suing in an attempt to get them.
A federal judge in Sacramento threw out the case against Ameen and cited "obliterating evidence" that showed Ameen was in Turkey at the time the Iraqi police officer was killed.
Because of that, the judge ordered Ameen's release from custody, but that same day he was taken into the custody of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
ICE claims Ameen lied on his refugee application, which was a claim made in the extradition case as well, that Ameen won.
Ameen's next hearing is scheduled for July 27.
