Prison sentence for July smuggling attempt off San Diego
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - A Mexican man who piloted a boat that capsized in the ocean off San Diego during an overnight drug and human smuggling attempt last year was sentenced to more than four years in custody, federal authorities said.Henry Javier Garcia Valle of Sinaloa received the 50-month sentence Monday in U.S. District Court in San Diego, the U.S. Attorney's Office said in a statement.He pleaded guilty last September to possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute.There were 14 people aboard the boat, which had no navigational lights, when the U.S. Coast Guard attempted to stop it around 4 a.m. on July 26, 2020, more than 7 miles (11 kilometers) off Mission Beach.The boat stopped after a short chase and individuals were seen throwing bags overboard. Three were recovered and found to contain 77.1 pounds (35 kilograms) of pure meth, prosecutors said.The boat took on water and began to capsize but all aboard were rescued.Three other men were charged in the case. Two pleaded guilty to human smuggling and the third pleaded guilty to the meth charge and is awaiting sentencing.Four people have died and others injured this month on the San Diego coast during attempts to smuggle migrants into the United States.
