On eve of state’s reopening employees return to shuttered Monterey businesses

On eve of state’s reopening employees return to shuttered Monterey businesses
This is an hotels say they are seeing an increase in customers and tourism as the state gets closer to full reopening with that part of the story, we go to Action News, a reporter Felix Cortez who's live in Monterey. Well erin tourism fuels the economy here on the Monterey peninsula. Today we caught up with some employees here at the Portola Hotel in Spall who respond who returned to work today for the first time in over 14 months California reopens Tuesday and the following day Peter B's brewpub will reopen its doors after being shuttered for the past 14 months. I truly enjoy working here and it was worth the wait for me. I was willing to wait for as long as it took for the opportunity to come back for me to come back. I've spent a decade here. I love the people who come in. I love all the regulars. I love the people I work with, love the organization and it was worth the wait for me. Most employees that Peter B's just recently got the call to return to work. A call that came just as the state is set to reopen and tourists expected to return for the summer season. Most of the associates that I call right away. That was the first thing they're like, great. I mean, you can sense how happy they were over the phone and then today when we see them, the energy that is there, I mean you see them right now cleaning. They're just excited to just get this going. Tourism fuels the economy on the Monterey peninsula and nobody is anticipating its return more than the business owners of restaurants and hotels that employ the county's second largest workforce. The industry taking a $1.8 billion dollar hit from the pandemic. I do think we are going to have a little faster recovery on the Monterey peninsula than some destinations and that's fortunate for all of us, especially the local governments that lost tons of tax revenue throughout the last year. Now come tomorrow, guests here at the hotel will not have to social distance or wear face coverings. But it will be encouraged for those who are not vaccinated to continue to wear a mask for as far as the employees are concerned, they will all still have to mask up until cal OSHA issues further guidelines and protocols regarding face coverings. They are expected to take that up Thursday reporting from Monterrey Felix Cortez KSB W action use eight mhm.
