Monterey hospitality employees rally for their jobs

Monterey hospitality employees rally for their jobs
tonight with reopening California. And many of those working in Monterey County, second largest industry hospitality looking for some guarantees that they'll get their jobs back. Many have yet to be called back to work and now they're calling on local leaders for help with more on exactly what they want. We go to action news reporter Felix Cortez live in Salinas tonight. What well erin even as California begins to reopen more and more hotel, many hotel and restaurant workers are still out of work. They want assurances that they'll get their job back. As the economy continues to bounce back a rally outside the chambers of Monterey County supervisors by hospitality workers. Many of them still out of work after the covid pandemic hit their industry hard. Many of these workers are still waiting to be recalled to their former jobs And what we are asking today it is to have them recall and get back to work. They need certainty in their future workers like Luis Avila's who was laid off last year after 21 years with the same hotel. We have a lot of pressure and circumstances about our, our life. You know, my wife not working, I'm not working, I had three kids. I'm about to lose. My house labor leaders are calling on county supervisors to approve an ordinance that would guarantee recall rights to all hospitality workers in Monterey County. So it's only right that they come back with the security that they had when we closed down and they come back with fair pay and fair benefits. Then it will be a full and equitable economy for all the ordinances, similar to a state law Governor Newsom signed it last week giving recall rights to all hospitality workers across the state. But opponents say both tie the hands of businesses, politicians. They say catering to union demands in hopes of getting votes in the best interest of the employee. You want to be loyal, you want to work hard and you want to grow. You want to be recalled because your employer wants to not because they have to. And furthermore, this is exactly the type of law that's causing a lot of our businesses to leave California. And of course, I'm wondering why we need a local ordinance when the governor signed a state law into effect last year, rather last week, labor leaders say the local ordinance goes a little further to include restaurant workers who are not affiliated with hotels or motels. Board of supervisors will take up that ordinance when they meet tomorrow morning reporting from Selena's Felix Cortez Kstw Action Music. Okay. Mhm. Yeah.
