But for the first time, one of those animals arrived in her own car service.

The story began Thursday on the streets of Hialeah, just outside of Miami.

Nurse practitioner Kylie Gross was on her way to work at a clinic where she administers COVID-19 vaccines.

She saw the tiny kitten running through traffic and said she just had to stop.

“I knew I needed to check my surroundings, look both ways, and definitely was hyper-aware of my surroundings this cat mission,” Gross said.

The mission was successful, and Gross was able to get the kitten into her car.

But as she continued on to work, the kitten somehow crawled underneath the steering wheel and vanished.

“When I got to work, I couldn’t get her out of the car,” Gross said. “I had no idea where she was. I could just hear her meowing.”

Fortunately, Hialeah firefighters and police officers were already stationed at the clinic.

It took some time and some food, but they were able to entice the kitten to come out.

Once the kitten was safe, Gross had a new problem: What should she do with her?

Gross's own dog doesn’t tolerate cats, so bringing the kitten home was not an option.

She called shelters in Miami but had no luck finding one to take the kitten.

However, Gross was familiar with Furry Friends Rescue in Jupiter.

“I contacted them, and they said if I could the cat to them, they would take her,” Gross said.

But Gross couldn’t leave work to drive all the way to Jupiter.

“So, I called the cat an Uber,” she said.

Uber driver Jose Jimenez said it’s the first time he’s been asked to drive a cat somewhere, but he was happy to do it.

A little more than an hour later, he pulled into the parking lot of Furry Friends with his own furry friend.

“When it comes to saving a little pet like this, I’ll go anywhere,” Jimenez said.

“I use Uber. So why not rescue a kitten using Uber?” Gross said.

It certainly wasn’t a cheap ride, either.

The total bill plus tip was $160.

Gross was asked if it was worth it.

“100%,” she said. “I’d do it again immediately.”

Doctors at Furry Friends said the kitten is a little underweight but is otherwise very healthy.

Staff at the shelter knew there was only one name they could give her: Uber.

“Feels great,” Jimenez said about being part of the team that saved Uber’s life. “Any time you can save anyone’s life, animal, human, anything, it feels great. It’s always great to save someone’s life.”

Uber should be available for adoption in three to four weeks.
