Frozen shrimp recalled over salmonella concerns

Frozen shrimp recalled over salmonella concerns
A recall has been issued for packages of frozen shrimp due to concerns about salmonella contamination. According to the recall notice from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, Avanti Frozen Foods Pvt. Ltd. recalled various-sized packages of frozen cooked, peeled, and deveined shrimp, including those sold with cocktail sauce. The products were distributed nationwide from late December 2020 until late February 2021.The brand names of the products included in the recall include Censea, Hannaford, Open Acres, Waterfront Bistro, Honest Catch, COS, 365 and Meijer. To date, the FDA says there have been six reports of salmonella-related illness associated with the recalled products. "The potential for contamination was identified by FDA based on its prior testing of frozen cooked shrimp imported by Avanti Frozen Foods that was found to contain salmonella," the FDA recall notice says. "Avanti Frozen Foods did not distribute and destroyed that prior shipment found to be violative. The company has taken preventative steps to eliminate the potential for future contamination."Consumers who purchased the impacted product should return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in people with weakened immune systems, including children and the elderly. Healthy people infected with salmonella typically experience a fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.
