Former UC Santa Cruz student accused of killing girlfriend deemed fit to stand trial
The Santa Cruz County District Attorney's Office deemed a former UC Santa Cruz student competent to stand trial after allegedly killing his girlfriend at Seabright Beach in February 2024.
The decision was made Wednesday morning after the results from two mental health evaluations came back. A doctor was appointed to the case and they generated two reports that supported that the suspect was aware of his actions when he allegedly committed the crime.
Samuel Brannigan Stone, 20, entered a plea of not guilty for one count of murder with special enhancements for a serious felony violation and a violent felony allegation.
