SAY A STANDOFF IN BOONE ENDED WITH TWO DEPUTIES SHOT AND ONE KILL AND WINSTON-SALEM POLICE TELLING US OVERNIGHT THAT THEY HELP. A PROCESSION OF A FALLEN WATAUGA COUNTY DEPUTY, THEY ESCORT HIS BODY TO WAKE FOREST BAPTIST MEDICAL CENTER EARLIER THIS MORNING AND JACKIE PASCHALL JOINS US NOW FROM BOONE WITH THE LATEST JACKIE. GOOD MORNING. DEVANTE AUDREY, GOOD MORNING. YEAH, SO WE ACTUALLY SAW A LOT OF THE OFFICES WHO PROBABLY WENT TO HELP WITH THAT TRANSFER GOING TO WAKE FOREST BAPTIST COMING BACK HERE EARLIER THIS MORNING, WE WHEN WE GOT HERE ON SEEING OFFICIALS TOLD US THAT STANDOFF DID AND AROUND MIDNIGHT LAST NIGHT AND THE PERSON WHO HAD BARRICADED HIMSELF INSIDE THE HOME HERE, THEY DID DIE AND SO WE ARE STILL LEARNING MORE THIS SITUATION, BUT WE DO KNOW THAT IT STARTED ALL YESTERDAY WITH A WELFARE CHECK AROUND 9:45, AND WE’RE TOLD THAT SERGEANT CHRIS WARD AND DEPUTY LOGAN FOX THEY WERE CHECKING ON A HOME HERE ON HARDEMAN CIRCLE DOING A WELFARE CHECK AFTER THE OWNER DIDN’T RESPOND TO ANY CALLS AND THEY HAD NOT GONE TO WORK THAT DAY. NOW POLICE SAY SOMEONE STARTED SHOOTING AT THOSE DEPUTIES FROM INSIDE THE HOME AGAIN BOTH WERE SHOT AND SERGEANT WARD WAS FLOWN TO JOHNSON CITY MEDICAL CENTER WHERE HE LATER DIED AND THE CONDITION OF DEPUTY FOX HAS STILL NOT BEEN CONFIRMED AS OF THIS MORNING BY POLICE MEANTIME THE SHOOTER BARRICADED HIMSELF IN THE HOME PERIODICALLY LETTING OFF SHOTS YESTERDAY. ROUTE THE DAY SHOOTING TOWARD THE OFFICERS WHO WERE SURROUNDING THE HOME AND WERE TOLD NEIGHBORS WERE EVACUATED DURING THAT TIME, BUT THE NAMES AND CONDITIONS OF ANY CIVILIANS THAT WERE IN THE AREA AGAIN UNKNOWN THIS MORNING THE WATAUGA COUNTY SHERIFF SAYS THIS SITUATION IS INCREDIBLY TRAGIC. Two deputies were killed and three other people including a suspected gunman were found dead after a 13-hour standoff in western North Carolina, a sheriff's office said Thursday.The Watauga County sheriff said both K-9 Deputy Logan Fox and Sgt. Chris Ward were killed in the ambush.Isaac Alton Barnes, 32, is suspected of killing his mother, Michelle Annette Ligon, 61, and his step-father, George Wyatt Ligon, 58, deputies said. The parents had lived at the residence where the standoff took place. A police officer who was helping in the response during the standoff was shot in the head, but a helmet saved their life, officials said. Investigators said Ward and Fox were dispatched to a home in Boone at 9:44 a.m. Wednesday after the homeowner and his family didn’t report to work or answer telephone calls, the sheriff's office said. They were hit by gunfire after entering the home, and while Ward was "extracted from the scene," Fox remained inside, the statement said.Morganton Department of Public Safety Maj. Ryan Lander told The News Herald just before 11 p.m. that the suspect appeared to have died by suicide, the newspaper reported.Sheriff Len Hagaman said Ward died at a hospital in Johnson City, Tennessee. He didn’t immediately release information about Fox."This is an incredibly tragic situation and our thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved as well as their families and our community," Hagaman said. "I greatly appreciate the tremendous support we are receiving from law enforcement agencies across the region and the state."The sheriff's office said officers from approximately 15 law enforcement agencies surrounded the home. Other people living nearby were evacuated or told to shelter in place as the standoff lasted throughout the day and Wednesday night.Clarence Wilson, 78, was on his porch when deputies pulled up in front of the house across the street. Gunfire erupted after the deputies arrived, Wilson said."Then they told me to get back in the house and stay," he said.Wilson said he later saw deputies pull a man from the house."I don't know if it was a deputy or who it was," he said. "I was just worried about keeping myself safe."Wilson said he heard a second barrage of gunfire around noon as the house remained surrounded.He said it's a "real quiet neighborhood" with many retirees like himself."We ain't used to all this," he said.
