A giant red ball will make its last appearance ever in Santa Cruz this weekend
For the last week, a giant red ball has been on display throughout Santa Cruz County and it's getting a lot of attention.
It's been spotted on the Santa Cruz Wharf and along Pacific Avenue.
The 15 foot in diameter, 250-pound work-of-art has made appearances on three continents, Europe, Asia and North America.
On Friday, it was in Watsonville.
It was brought here to celebrate The Museum of Art and History's 25th anniversary in Santa Cruz County. Since the MAH's logo shares the same design as the art exhibit, it only made sense to invite the project to Santa Cruz County
Some people just didn't know what to make of it as they drove or walked by but curiosity seemed to get the best of them.
"I saw traffic and I was like what's going on over there. I turn. I see, a big red ball," said Jacqueline Benegas of Watsonville.
"I think it's great. It came here! And we're kind of left out sometimes down here, so this is wonderful especially with the Farmer's Market across the street," said Sandy Haven of Watsonville.
Artist Kurt Perschke spent the Winter scoping locations where his red ball would fit in or rather squeeze in.
"We were interested in being able to spread out and go some-place unexpected like Watsonville," Perschke said.
Children were attracted to it, whether posing for keepsakes or just running or riding around it for fun-and called it as they saw it.
"I like this red shade of it. I think it's a nice color," said Iris McLaughlin of Santa Cruz.
The idea behind Perschke's RedBall Project is to capture a moment.
"Because each day totally unique. It never will happen again. The project will never be at this site again. It'll never be in Santa Cruz again," Perschke said.
If you missed the RedBall in Watsonville Friday, you can catch it Saturday and Sunday. Saturday it's at the MAH and Sunday at Cowell Beach. It'll be on display from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m.
Then it rolls on to France.
