3-year-old boy loses both parents to gun violence, his family responds to President Biden's plan to combat crime

In response to the rash of violence across America, President Joe Biden unveiled a five part plan to combat gun violence on Wednesday.One main focus is cracking down on gun sales and providing money to cities that need more police. The mother of Dereial Manning spoke with our sister station in New Orleans, WDSU, about the death of her daughter. The 20-year-old was shot and killed July 16, 2020, at the Carmel Springs Apartments, in front of her young son Corey. Her family, like many others, are seeking justice, and that something more will be done to fight crime. Nyress Manning, Dereial's mother said, "Since Katrina, crime went up. Now with the pandemic, crime is even higher. And it is the kids. I feel like the system has failed our children."Manning is now left to take care of Dereial's 3-year-old son Corey. Corey's dad, Corey Williams Senior, was shot and killed within three months of Dereial's murder. Manning is seeking justice. "You have a 3-year-old Black male who does not have a mother or father. And he has to grow up in the society we are in now," said Manning. Over the last 18 months, the White House said there has been a 30% increase in gun violence across the country. "To combat the epidemic of gun violence and other violent crime that we have been seeing in our country for far too long," Biden said. "It has spiked since the start of the pandemic." The Biden administration on Wednesday unveiled a plan to use federal resources in combating the problem.A key part, providing $350 billion in COVID-19 relief money in helping communities focus on crime fighting tactics, and hire more officers. The administration said the plan is a great start in combating crime here locally. "We are going to be focused on violence in our community. Especially gun violence because we know the trauma that it causes," said White House Senior Adviser Cedric Richmond. For those living the trauma, they said it takes a village. "In order for it to stop everyone has to step in," Manning said." What is the solution? I do not know. But we all need to put our heads together as parents, as politicians, as schools."
