A Salinas man was sentenced to prison for starting 2 fires on the 400 block of Old Stage Rd. in September and October of 2019.Celestino De la Cruz, 37, pleaded no contest to felony charges of arson and evading an officer. Arson constitutes a "strike" offense under California's "Three Strikes Law".De la Cruz intentionally burned a total of 22.4 acres in both wildland fires, according to investigators.A grey Nissan Quest minivan, registered to De la Cruz was captured on surveillance leaving the scene of both fires, say investigators.Just days after the October 22nd fire, a Monterey County Sheriff's sergeant attempted to stop De la Cruz. A pursuit ensued with De la Cruz crossing into oncoming traffic.Upon being pulled over, De la Cruz admitted to being the only one who drove his vehicle and that he did not let anyone else borrow the van.A judge sentenced Delacruz Wednesday to 4 years in prison for arson and evading police.
