Yesterday’s game at Gillette stadium brought the scorching heat, but fans turned out none-the-less. Sport Lisboa Benfica or “SLB” as fans know them, defeated AC Milan yesterday during the match in Foxborough. Temperatures read 92 degrees faranheit at one point, and I almost didn’t make it to the game given the heat. But I did. It was worth it. I expected Benfiquistas (fans) to show up in droves considering the enormous population of Portuguese and Cape Verdean people living in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, but the visual was impressive. Looking out into the stands we saw a sea of red, the signature color for the Portuguese soccer team.
They scored one goal in the 70th minute. The end score, 1-0, marking a 100% victory sweep for Benfica in the International Champions Cup. Portuguese or not, watching them play, even as we sweltered was a pretty awesome event.
